Gugong (The forbidden city)

Forbidden City (Gugong) |
Five hundred years ago, in the early
mornings when the fourth guard watch of
the night was proclaimed by powerful beats
from Gulou - the Drum Tower - the mandarins
in the imperial city would push aside
their silk bed curtains, wash, dress and
step into their litters in which porters
carried them to their morning audience
with the emperor in Gugong, the Forbidden
City (open summer 8.30am - 4.30pm; winter
8.30am - 3.30pm); enterance fee).

Forbidden City (Gugong) |
A eunuch would show them to their places,
arranged according to rank, where they
listened to the emperor in respectful
silence.
