Wanli Changcheng (Great wall)
Wanli Changcheng, the Great Wall, winds
its way like an endless, slender dgragon
from the yellow sea through five provinces,
two autonomous regions, and up into the
Gobi Desert. Towers are located at strategic
points. The very earlitst stages of the
building of the wall were in the 5th century
BC, but the pre-sent course was mainly
determined around 220 BC byQin Shi HUangdi,
the first Chinese emperor and the founder
of the empire.

Great Wall of China |
He had smaler, previously constructed
sections linked and extended northwards
to ward off the horse-riding nomads. However,
the most impressive sections seen today
were built during the Ming dynasty. Soldiers
and peasants from all parts of the country
were conscripted, spending several years
of their lives building this "ten
thousand li wall" - wanli changcheng.
Blocks of rock weighing serveral hunderd
kilograms had to be heaved up the steep
slopes, and an unknown number of people
paid with their lives for this project.
