Qufu (Hanyu Pinyin: Qūfù; Wade-Giles: Ch'ü1-fu4) is a city in Shandong Province, China. It is located at 35° 36′ northern latitude and 117°, 02′ east of Greenwich, about 130 km south of the provincial capital Jinan and 45 km northeast of the sub-provincial city Jining. Qufu has an urban population of about 60,000, the entire administrative region has about 650,000 inhabitants. Neighboring Areas: Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, and Hebei provinces Physical Features: the ratio between hills and plain is 3:7; the land descending from northeast to southeast Qufu was the central base of the eastern tribes in ancient China and was one of the areas where Dawenkou and the Longshan culture, famed for its black pottery, were found. It was also a city of music in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Confucius was born on Mt. Ni (551 BC), grew up in Jueli and was buried near the River Si. He gave his lectures from the Xing Altar and attended office in the capital of the Lu Kingdom, Qufu itself.
