Half of Shanghai's children under six have decayed teeth.

And on average, the children have 2 1/2 cavities each, according to a survey released yesterday by the Research Institute of Pediatric Dentistry of Tongji University.

Experts attributed the problem to a lack of early dental checks and parents failing to teach children about the proper way to protect teeth.

The survey, which covered more than 10,000 children aged under 18 in the city, suggests that those aged between four and six have the highest rate of decayed teeth, with nearly 60 percent having dental problems.

In the United States, a similar survey found that only 28 percent of children in the same age group had decayed teeth and each child had one cavity on average, the dentistry institute said.

The city survey also said 40 percent of primary and middle school students in Shanghai suffer from gum inflammation.
