Shanghai Shenhua was unable to turn the slide in its fortunes yesterday despite a spirited second half display as Sydney FC walked away 2-1 winners in its Asian Champions League debut at Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong last night.

Veteran striker Xie Hui pulled a goal back minutes after coming in as a late substitute for midfielder Jiang Kun as the home side desperately looked to battle back after two early blows in the game.

Sydney raced into an early lead through a sixth minute strike from Stephen Coria and doubled the tally from a ferocious Ufuk Talay volley from outside the box that left Shenhua goalie Wang Dalei stunned on the line.
