Shanghai shares slip 1.7% by midday

SHANGHAI and Shenzhen stocks fell modestly this morning, hit by profit-taking and weak performances in other key markets following the plunge Tuesday that rattled markets worldwide. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.7 percent by midday to 2,831.57. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index was 0.5 percent lower at 733.05, The Associated Press reported. On Tuesday, the Shanghai index tumbled nearly 9 percent, triggering a sell-off in global markets, before rebounding almost 4 percent yesterday.
