Taiwan had 15.23 million users of Internet services during early December 2006 to mid-January 2007, representing 66.91% of Taiwan's total population, according to a survey of 3,199 households conducted by Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC). Of the Internet users, 1.96 million, or 12.87%, were children aged below 12. The survey was conducted from December 4, 2006 to January 15, 2007. Internet-connected households totaled 5.51 million in number, representing 74.89% of the total number of households in Taiwan. Out of this group, 76.03% used ADSL, with Chunghwa Telecom's HiNet having a market share of 82.72%. There were an estimated 4.26 million users of WLAN services and 1.86 million users of mobile Internet services, accounting for 21.78% and 9.53%, respectively, of the population aged 12 and above. Of mobile Internet surfers, 53.91% used GPRS handsets, followed by 3G at 21.77%, PHS (personal handy-phone system) at 9.33% and WAP at 9.10%. Of the Internet services most used by Taiwan Internet users, webpage-browsing ranks first at 67.37%, followed by email at 40.34%, information search at 26.44%, instant messaging (or chatting online) at 24.18%, and online gaming at 18.72%.
