Amateur formula auto racing is a hobby for the very rich. That may change as three entrepreneurs build China's first homegrown Formula 2000 car and plan its May debut to include even some talented teenage drivers.

What do a former Wall Street trader, the son of an award-winning movie director and a talented ex-General Motors Corp engineer have in common?

The answer: a vision of China's first homegrown formula racing series.

And that vision now moves into the fast lane to reality as the embryonic China Formula 2000 (CF2000) Championship has settled the schedule for its debut season.

Twenty drivers, in identical chassis, from all over Greater China will go wheel-to-wheel on May 26-27 at the Formula One-standard Shanghai International Circuit for the season opener. It will be followed by five stop-overs through October. The fourth event will be a support race for the annual Formula One Chinese Grand Prix.
