Overseas visitors decreased at the just concluded East China Fair in Shanghai this year compared to 2006, but trade deals increased, the event's organizer said. The number of overseas visitors dropped 20 percent year on year as many Asian nations were still celebrating the Lunar New Year, which concluded a few days before the fair, said the Shanghai Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission, the event's organizer. In addition, some countries were hit by storms, hampering transport to China, the commission said based on a survey. More than 18,500 overseas buyers were present at China's second-biggest trade fair, also deemed a barometer of the nation's exports for the year, commission officials said. Some exhibitors also attributed the decline in visitors to the country's export rebate cut in December, which caused some companies to rush new year deals out before new rates took effect.
