Disallowed Posts - 2007/02/06 23:40 1) Anything advertising any commercial product or service, unless admin staff have been asked first and the posting approved.
2) Announcements about new forums / websites for Chinese learners. 99% of these are empty forums and websites full of copied material. One posting may be allowed for something that looks promising, but anything else will be removed.
3) Posts which provide no useful information. A discussion about tone sandhi does not need to be told 'there are 4 tones in Chinese, they are very important'.
4) Attempts to promote a site under the guise of contributing - 'Yes, this is a very interesting topic, which don't you check out www.mywebsite.com, where mywebsite.com has little or no useful information.
5) Posts soliciting communication off-site. I.e., 'I know the answer, email me'; or 'I can help you with that, contact me on MSN'. Language exchange requests, or where there is a valid reason for private communication are still fine.
6) Posts entirely / largely not in (understandable) English

But, how can I promote my site then?

If you have a site / product / service you want to promote, mention it in your signature and start making useful contributions in your area of expertise. People will notice, and they'll visit your site. Anything more intrusive is annoying and won't work.
