Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, is an industrial center and seaport on the Min River. The mineral esources are abundant. Among them, the reserve of Yela Stone is in the first place in China. The resources of forests, aquatic products and electron are abundant too. Fuzhou is the important industrial base in Fujian Province. The output value here can occupy 1/5 of the total output.

Manufactured products include chemicals, silk and cotton textiles, iron and steel, and processed food. Among its exports are fine lacquerware and handcrafted fans and umbrellas. The city's trade is mainly with Chinese coastal ports; exports of timber, food products, and paper move through the harbor at Guantou (Kuan-t'ou), which is located about 50 km downstream of Fuzhou on the Min River.

Fuzhou is the communication hub both for the water transport and for the land transport. Mawei Port is the out port that is in the northern part of Ma River. It has been the port for foreign trade since the ancient times in China. Fuzhou was opened to foreign trade in 1842 as a concession to the British after China was defeated in the first Opium War. From then until the late 19th century, Fuzhou was a major port for the export of tea. In 80's, Mawei was built as an economy and technique developing area. From then on, it has been one of the important trade ports in China. Now, it has the economic and trade relationship with about 22 countries and areas in the world.

For many years' development and construction, the High-tech Park has become the important new growth point for Fuzhou economy. Till 2000, the Park has totally 69 enterprises, of which 35 enterprises are ppraised as the high-tech enterprises by the Provincial Science Commission. They forms the economic structure taking the lead of high-tech industry which developed 497 items of hi-tech projects.
